Laboratory Alliance is the area’s largest state-licensed laboratory, providing clinical and anatomic pathology testing to a 16-county region in Central New York. As the laboratory of choice for most local healthcare providers, more than three million tests are performed annually at our laboratories at our Operations Center in Liverpool and at Crouse Hospital in Syracuse, N.Y.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of the Senior Technical Supervisor and the guidance of the pathologists and pathologists’ assistants, the anatomic pathology processor assists in the preparation of surgical pathology specimens. May have contact with patients, hospital employees, physicians, pathologists, nursing personnel, visitors, laboratory personnel, vendors, and regulatory or accrediting agencies

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• General maintenance
• Stocking of the surgical pathology laboratory
• Preparation of specimens for special studies
• Patient registration
• Specimen accessioning
• Answering / directing telephone calls.
• Other duties performed, as requested.  

 

EDUCATION: 

High school degree, college level course work in allied health or natural sciences desirable.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND HAZARDS:

The work environment is primarily a laboratory setting with high exposure to communicable diseases, bloodborne pathogens, toxic substances, and other conditions common to a healthcare environment, includes exposure to fresh (non-fixed) tissue specimens.

The  physical  demands  described  here  are  representative  of  those  that  must  be  met  by  an  employee  to  successfully perform  the  essential  functions  of  this  job.  Reasonable  accommodations  may  be  made  to  enable  individuals  with disabilities  to  perform  the  essential  functions.. The employee is regularly both stationary and required to move about from work station to station. Frequently required to perform duties associated with the use of a computer and laboratory instruments; to grasp small objects and perform tasks associated with eye-hand coordination; to distinguish details of objects less than a few feet away and determine and detect difference between size, color, numbers, shades, and brightness, as well as differentiate sounds. Must have the ability to frequently lift and maneuver up to 50 pounds.

SKILLS AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Proven interpersonal and communication skills, ability to adapt to changing workload and stressful situations.  Strong communication skills with an appreciation for quality customer service, and strong computer skills preferred.  Experience in patient registration and order entry functions.  Extensive knowledge of diagnostic, therapeutic and disease terminology.  Requires the use of equipment such as computer terminals, centrifuges, bone saw, telephones, copiers and fax machines.

 

LOCATION: Crouse RRL

SALARY RANGE: $17.00 - $19.00 per hour DOE
